Playing Freerolls

Posted by admin on 03 Mar 2010 | Tagged as: Gambling Capers, The Fun Universe

Everybody loves free online poker tournaments. Not only are they ways to make free money or bonus spots online, but they are also a chance to try out new moves or tactics in a field of players for no cost. In a way, among fields where the freeroll players take the game seriously, there is no better time to try to expand your game and make moves you normally wouldn’t, to see how they can apply to your regular games for real stakes.

One of the problems about freerolls is that often, precisely because they are free, players take them as spots to throw around their chips. Early on in these tournaments you will often see players throwing their chips around fast and quickly, trying to build a big stack or go bust. After this phase of players has boiled off, though, often the fields settle down and start playing quality poker. This is where you want to be.

Just like any other poker tournament, a freeroll should be respected as a facet of the game. If you don’t respect the game, you can’t expect the game to respect you, no? Donking off can be fun every now and then, but there’s no reason a great player can’t win a freeroll with as much pride as a “real” tournament.

Green Police Patrolling Glastonbury Festival

Posted by admin on 05 Feb 2010 | Tagged as: The Fun Universe

The Green Police are on patrol in the UK’s world famous annual musical festival, the Glastonbury Festival. Every year, the Glastonbury Festival attracts thousands of music and culture fans in its eclectic showcasing of top-name bands, cultural shows, and performance art. To make sure the Glastonbury Festival has the minimal amount of environmental impact, festival organizers are accepting applications from volunteer Green Police to make sure the festival is clean and green.

The duties of the green police include educating people on how to reduce their environmental impact. The green police volunteers will show people how to properly dispose their cigarette butts, recycle their containers, as well as make sure no one is littering…or urninating in the bushes!

Each green police officer will go through a complete training session, and then they are encouraged to create their own colorful and inventive uniform. Green police volunteers will get to have their own exclusive camp area. Like any normal police officer, green police volunteers are expected to refrain from drinking, smoking, or having an hangover while on duty.

Green police volunteers are treated like any other festival employee, and are considered essential members of the Glastonbury Festival team. However, to discourage people from simply volunteering as green police to get free tickets, green police volunteers must pay for their ticket before their service. After the green police volunteer successfully completes his or her service, that volunteer will get a full reimbursement of the ticket.

Heads up against a Maniac

Posted by admin on 05 Feb 2010 | Tagged as: Gambling Capers, The Fun Universe

Playing against maniac players in heads up poker might be less of a straightforward procedure than that required against a weak tight player, but there still are many patterns involved. Maniacal players love to get in and raise and reraise every pot, pushing on the idea that you won’t have a hand to fight back against them with. While it is true that you won’t be making the big hands against these online poker players that you would when facing them in ring games as often, their overly aggressive manner is just as open to weak points, primarily in that when you do make a hand, you can exploit it and get paid.

As in other scenarios, facing the maniac will often require that you play slightly tighter than you normally would. Allowing the maniac to pick up a few small pots as he keeps pushing is fine, as long it’s not that you are playing so tightly that the odds are against you to make a hand. Usually seeing flops where the raises aren’t brutal and trying to make a post-flop hand, then charging for it is a better method than trying to push back too often preflop. The deeper you go in the hand, and the more you are defined, the better you will be able to trap your aggressive online poker opponent in his own snare.

Crippling Monsters

Sometimes in Texas Hold ‘Em poker poker, the flop hits a player big time. Perhaps you flop a not-so-obvious straight with your inside connectors or a set that goes on to complete to a bigger hand. Most often you can build up the pots with these hands and rake in plenty of chips.

Then there are times when a poker online player hits a true monster on the flop, but unfortunately the monster hit basically cripples the deck for the other players and there will be little, if any, betting action. This situation develops when you are holding big pocket cards like Aces or Kings and then flop quads. With two matching cards out there and the other two in your hand, no one else at the table holds anything that looks to beat the board.

When you hit these monsters, for instance quads with your pocket Jacks, you can only slow play them and hope someone else holds a higher card that does pair the board. There is even a small chance that someone will hit a set, and with the paired cards on board, completes a full house.

Any time you know you hold the nuts, you want to carefully plan how to get maximum return for the hand. In most cases though, you’ll get very little action with flopped monsters because it has crippled the deck, and slow playing is the only way you’ll get anyone to put chips into the pot. Remember this when you play poker online.

The Art of Poker Warfare

Posted by admin on 22 Oct 2009 | Tagged as: Gambling Capers, The Fun Universe

The game of online poker is often likened to war, and aptly so. Just as in traditional warfare, poker online players must advance on the opponents with the goal of capturing the enemy’s goods. When threatened with greater force, like a big bet from a huge stack, poker online players with weak hands must retreat, leaving behind any chips invested in the battle.

Poker pundits sometime quote from The Art of War, by Sun Tzu, whose 6th century treatise on war still holds valuable truths today about how to confront an enemy and win battles. One of the most poker applicable theories from The Art of War is that “warfare is based on deception.” Poker is a game of deceit that relies on stealth tactics to win at times.

Poker players sometimes must feign weaknesses when they are strong and strength when holding weak hands. On the biggest challenges and thrills in poker is winning the pot while holding inferior cards. This can only be practiced through carefully planned selective bluffing, and by creating a player image that fools and confounds your opponents.

Deceit is also key to building bigger pots to plunder when you do hold the best hand. Slow playing monster cards, and executing a check-raise are classic poker tactics. Sun Tzu said, “”In war, practice dissimulation, and you will succeed.” The same applies to poker.

Contrary Play

poker wisdom says play tight at loose tables and loose at tight tables. What does it mean? Whether you’re playing poker online or at a live casino table, there is typically a certain tone at the table. This tone may vary as the game goes on because smart poker online players know to change their playing styles to keep their opponents guessing. Generally, you’ll find some tables may have one or more players who are continually aggressive and loose, betting out big and often. At other tables, the atmosphere may be very conservative with only a few players limping in after the blinds with little or minimal raising. Seasoned poker players often wait out a few hands before getting involved in any action just to identify the table tone and players’ style. This allows newcomers to the table to adjust their betting strategy to the other players’ betting patterns.

A loose table can be a dangerous black hole for your chips. Limping into pots that are raised behind you can quickly erode your chip stack. At a loose table, you should only call a bet with power hands that justify a raise. You might not want to bet out with a raise because it could set off a raising war from loose players. Just be prepared to back your initial bet with the probable raise from a maniac. By playing tight at a loose table, you might win some respect since other players will notice that you only enter a pot with solid hands. Tight tables call for the opposite strategy. You can leverage the conservative players’ tendency to fold and scare them off the pot with bets. The loose aggressive image you convey will intimidate other players because your style is unpredictable since you instigate action with a wide variety of hands. If you change your style after awhile, going from loose to tight after a few rounds, you’ll create more confusion. Play tight for awhile, then start betting out again when a table tends to be tight.

On the Bounty

Posted by admin on 01 Jun 2009 | Tagged as: Gambling Capers, The Fun Universe

Some online poker tournaments are formatted at “bounty” events that offer additional prizes beyond simply paying out to the top percentage of casino winners. What exactly is a bounty tournament? In a bounty online poker tournament, any time one player eliminates an opponent, the eliminator earns a bounty on the kill. This creates extra incentive to knock out other players. By winning a bounty, a player can offset the cost of entering the tournament. The amount of the bounty can vary. In some bounty tournaments, every bounty is the same reward, a fixed prize amount. Other bounty tournaments add an element of luck and surprise by setting up bounties like a raffle. The bounty winner picks out a ticket or a card with the prize amount from a container. The bounty might be low or high, and in some cases, it might even match the entry fee, thus turning the event into a free roll for that player. Where does the money come from to pay these bounties? It is part of the entry fee, which includes extra money that is set aside to pay the bounties. This makes the tournament a little more expensive to enter and reduces the amount of prize money paid to the top finishers. Adding a bounty element to low-priced home tournaments makes them more fun. For instance, for a home game with a $10 buy-in, each player can also put up $5, and when they push all their chips into the pot, the money goes too. Whoever wins the pot, wins the cash bounty too.
