Birthday Surprise

“A vacation in the Caribbean” screamed my son Shawn, “I’m not going anywhere, especially if Ryan is going along”. Ryan and Shawn had been at loggerheads for a week now and it looked like it was time for a showdown. Gosh! I wish they would sort out whatever was bothering them. I wasn’t going to let anything or anyone ruin my hard-earned vacation.
I thought it best to ignore the two and continue with my planning. This time I wanted to go scuba diving and I was not going to give them a choice. Scuba diving it would be. It was my birthday, after all. I wanted to explore the exotic marine life in the Caribbean this time around. I had read a lot about the beaches in Aruba, Oranjestad: Arashi Beach, Eagle Beach, and Palm Beach. All of them had facilities for some water sports or the other with opportunities to look at the marine life in the shipwrecks near the shore off Oranjestad .
“Okay guys it’s time to make the bookings” I said “would you like to come along or do I just go on my own?” Not a word from either of them. Okay, so they didn’t want to go along. I might as well go alone, I decided. I had reached a point where I didn’t really care. I would go alone and see the beautiful marine life in the Caribbean Sea.
On the day before I left for my trip, Shawn decided to go and sleep over with a friend while Ryan had to go away on a business trip. I was really disappointed. They didn’t even want to come and see me off. My dream vacation to explore the marine life didn’t seem as exciting as I boarded the flight to Oranjestad.
It was midnight when I tipped the porter at the door and let myself into the hotel room. It was dark inside. The lights were suddenly turned on and I heard someone shout “Surprise.” I couldn’t believe my eyes. Both Ryan and Shawn were in the room.
“Hey Mom, it’s your birthday today and we thought we’d surprise you.”
